A blocked account (Sperrkonto) is the most common way for non-EU students to prove they can support themselves in Germany.
How it works
- You open the account with a recognised provider before applying for your visa.
- You deposit the full amount for one year.
- After you arrive and activate the account, a fixed amount is released to you each month.
How much?
The required amount is set by the German government and is updated periodically. The most recently published figure is €11,904 per year (€992 per month). Always check the current amount before you transfer money; we confirm it with you during your consultation.
Common mistakes
- Transferring too little, or from an account in someone else's name without the right documents.
- Leaving it too late: transfers and confirmations can take days.
- Using an unrecognised provider.
Not every country requires a blocked account. Hungary, for example, does not use one for the programs we offer.
