Moving to Europe is exciting, and a few simple habits make a big difference. These are the things we remind every student about before they fly.
DO
- Register your address soon after you arrive. In Germany this is the Anmeldung, usually within two weeks.
- Keep your passport, residence permit and health insurance valid at all times. Diary the expiry dates.
- Keep digital and paper copies of all your important documents.
- Always buy and validate a public transport ticket. Ticket inspections are frequent and fines are expensive.
- Be on time. Punctuality matters for classes, appointments and job interviews.
- Learn some of the local language, even if you study in English.
- Separate your rubbish and recycle. Many countries take it seriously.
DON'T
- Don't work more hours than your permit allows. It can put your residence status at risk.
- Don't send money for an apartment you haven't verified. Rental scams target newcomers.
- Don't ignore official letters. Open and respond to them, or ask us for help.
- Don't overstay your visa or let your residence permit lapse.
- Don't make loud noise during quiet hours, especially at night and on Sundays in Germany.
Rules differ between countries and change over time. When in doubt, ask us before you act.
